Two Magazine Jobs And An Open-Ended Question

Indianapolismonthlycover_2Indianapolis Monthly has two positions currently posted on the Emmis website:

Senior Editor

Art Director

Speaking of the publication, what's your take on its role in the world of local journalism?

What's Going On At WTHR, Dispatch?

Wthr_2There are rumors afoot following the announcement of an impending management change at Dispatch Broadcast Group, the family-owned parent of local ratings powerhouse WTHR-TV.

Michael Curtin, the Ohio-based company's longtime Number Two, will step down at the end of this year to pursue other opportunities.

That's caused some folks to start wondering whether the Wolfe family, which has owned the media group since the late 1920s, is considering a sale -- and what that might mean for those outlets under the Dispatch umbrella.

Adding to the corporate uncertainty, WTHR is still dealing with its own management issues after the sudden -- and allegedly involuntary -- departure of longtime general manager Rich Pegram earlier this month.

What are you hearing?

Opting In To Get ZIP-Specific Ads

Newspaper_2 Hat tip to the kind reader who forwarded this Washington Times story about a new Gannett advertising module that's already been tested in the Indy market:

"Gannett Co. this month started an approach for its newspapers that targets advertising to specific ZIP codes.

"Market research suggests it could succeed, but the option is being introduced during a long slide for newspaper ad revenue.

"Borrell Associates, the market research firm, predicted newspaper ad revenue from real estate brokers would fall 37 percent by 2011 as more subscribers turn to the Internet for news.

"Revenue from all sectors of newspaper advertising continues to decline, compelling owners to invest more their Internet presence and innovate in newspaper advertising."

More on the initiative:

"McLean-based Gannett"s newspaper division this month introduced Sunday Select, an option for consumers to receive national and local pre-print advertising wrapped in an editorial product called 'Yes: Your Essential Shopper.'

"'What sets this program apart from other targeted delivery methods is the opt-in process,' said Leslie Giallombardo, vice president of advertising for Gannett's newspaper division. 'In our early research and development efforts, we discovered a group of consumers who are intensely interested in shopping information, whether or not they read the Sunday newspaper. The distribution is targeted to select ZIP codes that are highly desired by our advertisers on a distribution day that is important to their businesses.'

"Gannett tested the concept on 1,800 consumers and in focus groups in Des Moines, Iowa, and Indianapolis."

Star Leases Mooresville Space For New Distribution Center

IndystarAccording to its afternoon business update, the Indy Star is leasing space in Mooresville for a consolidated distribution center:

"Indianapolis Newspapers Inc. has leased 6,240 square feet of newly built space in Flagstaff Business Park in Mooresville for a consolidated distribution center for The Indianapolis Star's circulation in the Morgan County area. Distribution will be moved out of three smaller buildings the newspaper uses in Mooresville and Martinsville. Colliers Turley Martin Tucker represented the newspaper in the deal."

Speaking of space, does anyone know what the plans are for the old printing press area at 307 North Pennsylvania? It currently is being used for storage.
