Whatever You Say: Six GOP Council Members Bail Out, But All Is Well

Quizzicalduck_4In case you'd lost count, WISH-TV would like to remind you that one two three four five six Republicans on the City-County Council are opting not to run again this year.

"As of Monday afternoon, the field is set for this year's City-County Council races and almost half the Republicans who now sit on the council are not running for another term. Currently, the Democrats have just a one seat majority on the council. Now, with six Republicans deciding not to run, Democrats say that majority could increase significantly.

"The City-County Council is almost split down the middle with 15 Democrats and 14 Republicans. Scott Schneider of the 4th District is one of the Republicans who has decided against running.

"'For me personally, it's just not the time for me to devote to that right now, unfortunately. It is what it is, and my kids need to see me right now, more than my colleagues at council meetings,' Schneider said.

"Schneider said the fact that six Republicans are leaving, while every Democrat is trying to stay, is a coincidence.

"'I wouldn't read anything into this that Republicans are conceding power,' he said."

Okay, Scott. We'll just pretend there's nothing at all to the fact that six Republicans are running away at the same time the party has put up a bevy of goofballs for the at-large seats and nominated absolutely no one viable for Mayor.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

(We all know this is a post-Murphy rebuilding year. We want you to know that it's okay for you to admit it, too.)

"Whatever You Say: Six GOP Council Members Bail Out, But All Is Well"

Yup, all is well. A mother shot while holding her baby. A woman abducted and raped from a downtown parking garage. These last handfull of conservative republicans see the future. It is time to make plans to get the hell out and flee to a safe zone. Coming soon to Marion County: More corruption, more shady deals to benefit political hacks, etc. etc.. I don't want to hear no complaints, you get what you ask for.

didn't indyU say something about greenwood being full of murders too??? and there is prostitution and drugs in carmel and fishers! oh my god! what do we do??

Some of us would rather be part of the solution, 12:11.

I find it hard to believe there are no qualified Republican candidates in this county.

Granted, it'll take some time to reorganize and get things in order after half a decade of hit-or-miss GOP leadership.

"I find it hard to believe there are no qualified Republican candidates in this county."

Halarious. I guess you consider Gray, Howard, and Carson the most qualified Democrat candidates in the county. Sorry, Marion County is a lost cause for conservative living. Marion County votes too strong straight ticket Dem for a Republican to really be a strong candidate. Why even try when a decent size group of voters is voting party and not person? This is the same group that is happy with a failed business owner running their CCC.

"Marion County votes too strong straight ticket Dem for a Republican to really be a strong candidate."

Don't tell Carl Brizzi.

"Why even try when a decent size group of voters is voting party and not person?"

Gosh, I dunno. The two-party process?

If all the anons want to go on whining about crime, whine to the right people.

Most major cities are dealing with an increase in crime. Why? Because under GOP Grand-PoohBah George W Bush we've seen an increase in poverty.

More people are living in poverty than before. Increased poverty means increased crime.

Of course, whining about that can't be aimed at a Democrat,so I'm sure there will be deafening silence from you on this subject, or a whole lotta stutterin BS

Indy sucks. It's a high-tax, high-crime, ugly liberal paradise.

Indytroit.

"Indy sucks. It's a high-tax, high-crime, ugly liberal paradise."

Spoken like a true troll.

1:42, if your racism is typical of people who live outside of Marion County, then I'm glad I don't live in the 'burbs.

Crime statistics are troubling, everywhere. Last weekend three armed gunmen held up a CVS in Greenfield in broad daylight.

I'm a Democrat who is disgusted with current CCC leadership. But the only blame the mayor has on those escapades, is that he didn't use his bully pulpit to shame the offenders.

I credit the Mayor with callin together all the aprticipating parties--judges, public defender, police, prosecutor, council--last summer, and working collectively to thwart these growing crime numbers.

Big job. Tough one, too. But decades of neglect.

You nutball Liberals are funny. With every word you say, you make Morgan County more attractive.

Everything is racism. Whatever. It gets really old.

In five years, Indy is in for some serious problems. It's time to go.

Have a nice trip, 1:58.

"Don't tell Carl Brizzi."

Carl Brizzi is voted for by everyone in the county whereas CCC races are broken down into certain areas. In some areas, it would be silly to run unless you have a D by your name.

"Gosh, I dunno. The two-party process?"

Why is this process so important? If everything is rule by majority anyways, who cares if there is just one party to vote for? Sorry, but as this country continues to fragment, folks are going to have to move to an area that supports their views on how the world should run. You also proved my point. Who cares about a two-party process? We should have been focused on a multi-person process, but there is now too much power in the two-party process to really change.

"1:42, if your racism is typical of people who live outside of Marion County, then I'm glad I don't live in the 'burbs."

1:42 said: "Indy sucks. It's a high-tax, high-crime, ugly liberal paradise. Indytroit." How does this equal racism? Are you saying that Detroit only is a cesspool because of blacks? Are you saying that if it were not for blacks, Detroit would be a nice place? Sounds like YOU are the racist here!!

"Carl Brizzi is voted for by everyone in the county..."

So, how 'bout that GOP mayoral candidate?

"More people are living in poverty than before. Increased poverty means increased crime."

That is correct for 2005, but not historically correct. 2001-2004 saw an increase in the poverty rate, but a decrease in the violent crime rate.

The violent crime rate decreased every year under Clinton. However, the poverty rate bounced around quite a bit from year-to-year.

2006 will probably be terrible for both.

I just got back to Gary from Indy. I can tell you that Indy is Gary on a fast track. Too many murders, prostition, drugs. Close to as bad as Gary ten years ago. At least some progress here except no Colts (and thank God no Dom Rhodes). Gool luck Indy and God protect you. At one time we were all Democrats also. Really need some balance of power. I will pray for you.

Indianapolis has always had a diversified economy - Gary was nothing except STEEL - even the city was named after the president of the big STEEL company only 100 years ago. Gary was created for STEEL - without that industry, Gary has collapsed. Duh.

So how is Indianapolis like Gary or Detroit? The unsaid implication is that it is "too Black" which is odd since Indpls is only 24% African-American.

The prostitutes are going to Carmel, where the money is. Since there is no money in Indy to pay hookers, they moved.
Indy has too muny already, so they had to move. The corruption in Indy, paid protection only goes so far.
Only the crime rates are going to be comprable to Detroit and Gary. The demographics don't have to be the same. Why is Wilson playing the race card on this? He's a white guy.

Because racism is an evil that trancends race and corrupts all - I abhor white supremacist attitudes because they are contrary to Americanism: that all are created equal. Racism is corrosive to fundamental U.S. citizenship and civic life.

The very phrase "playing the race card" is a code phrase for "Damn - We've been caught again being white supremacists! Let's play victim!"

When Rosa Parks was arrested, many white folk just sniffed at those 'coloreds' playing the race card - she was clearly breaking the law and going against traditional Southern values! The Supreme Court disagreed.

Wow, the quality of trolls really goes down when you get to the more local blogs.

TDW: you gotta get a higher profile! You need better trolls with at least a smidgen of logical reasoning.

"You need better trolls with at least a smidgen of logical reasoning."

Then they wouldn't be trolls.

The local stuff always gets 'em going.

...and the slightest whiff of any issue openly involving race swiftly gets overwhelmed by a mighty flood of white folk complaining that the shoe fits them all too well...

I cannot bear to listen to a bunch of Republican whiners complain about the lack of a 2-party system in Marion County. Come visit Allen County and talk with some Democrats. Yeah, we're here, and we're starting to win because we're neither whining nor moving away.

Recruit good candidates. Build the party. But kwitcherbitchin.

No Republican in Indy is complaining about the lack of a two-party system in Indy.

We simply don't care about Indy.

We have lovely burbs...for now. Let's hope the people we left stay where they belong.

"I cannot bear to listen to a bunch of Republican whiners complain about the lack of a 2-party system in Marion County."

What are you talking about, it is the Dems who do the complaining. Look at who is bringing it up...the Dem blog of all people. Everyone sees the writing on the wall, but the Dems keep wanting to cry about the "two-party process." Unless I was wrong TDW was a Democrat.

"No Republican in Indy is complaining about the lack of a two-party system in Indy.
We simply don't care about Indy.
We have lovely burbs...for now. Let's hope the people we left stay where they belong."

Exactly. I don't consider myself a Republican, more of a conservative. Brizzi is an anomaly. His win only shows that straight party voting for the Dems still needs to go up just a little bit to ensure a complete take-over.

What makes me really happy is all the rampant corruption coming from Marion County "leaders." That alone pretty much kills any future "regional tax" with half the money flowing into Indy. They got their coliseum and convention center and that will be it. Once built, use surburban folks need to press our elected leaders to kill the tax. Indy is already demanding to keep the tax going to run the place. Whatever happened to the windfall of tax income it was supposed to bring?

Boo-hoo-hoo! The GOP decrying straight ticket voting? More excuses (as usual). In the last election, the GOP got 45% of straight ticket votes (we got 55%). Not quite enough but 53,000 Republican "sheeple" pulled the straight ballot lever. True, 64,000 Democrats voted straight ticket. 204,000 votes were cast total in Marion County.

"We have lovely burbs...for now. Let's hope the people we left stay where they belong."

Guess what? In America folk can live and move wherever they wish - Jim Crow is dead - segregation is over. Get used to it!

Wilson's taken over again.

Just curious, Jen, but why do you label the 4 GOP candidates for the At-Large seats "goofballs"?

Are they any goofier than Sanders, Boyd, Conley, and Gibson? Frankly, replacing those 4 would be a step toward respectability of the City-County Council, which has lost a lot of respect.

The reason that the Dems are winning everything in Marion County is because of one person Ed Treacy. Ed Treacy kicked Keeler's and Murphy's butt all over the county. Keeler and Murphy were weak, ineffective leaders. I am not sure that Tom John is the answer for the Republicans.

"Just curious, Jen, but why do you label the 4 GOP candidates for the At-Large seats 'goofballs'?"

Read closely. I didn't say they were all goofballs. I said a "bevy" of goofballs.

I'm given to understand that one of them is fairly credible. The other three fall into the Hailstone category.
