Breaking News: Glenn Murphy Faces Criminal Deviate Conduct Investigation
UPDATE: Murphy may not face charges for 30 to 40 days.
Clark County GOP Chair and newly elected Young Republican National Federation Chair Glenn Murphy is under investigation for criminal deviate conduct, a Class B felony, for allegedly engaging in oral sex with a sleeping victim. This is not his first run-in with the law for this kind of offense.
Read the investigative report and a prior arrest for sexual battery in 1998 here: glennmurphy.pdf
WARNING: This is some pretty graphic stuff. Don't let the kiddies read it.
UPDATE: Murphy recently sent an e-mail telling friends in Florida about his decision to resign from the YRNF position for business reasons. Read his letter after the jump.
To my dearest friends in Florida,
It's been an absolutely crazy weekend for me, and I just wanted to take a few minutes and share with you some of the decisions I’ve had to make in a very short amount of time. Some you may have heard, some not.
I wanted to address the Floridians specifically because of the close friendships I have developed with so many of you.
First the great news. I bid on a contract for my company a little more than a year ago. I didn't think it was going to go anywhere. It was a huge project, and taking on the commitment would be life altering for me and my business — my company doing in one year what I would ordinarily do in five. I never thought in a million years that I would land this bid. Well, I landed the bid Friday. Yay for me, right?
There was a major catch.
Due to the nature of the client, one of the stipulations in the contract was that I hold no official partisan titles. (insert gut-wrenching dilemma here) I could help. I could maintain the political consulting division of my business as long as I had additional lead consultants. But I could hold no official Republican positions.
My family sat down with me Saturday evening to look at things from every angle. We're very close. My mom was pretty blunt about what I needed to do. If I didn't take the job, there could potentially never be that type of opportunity again and I would be shorting the security of my future and the future of my family. I took mom's advice to heart.
Every one knows how hard I've worked for the party and the Young Republicans. We've achieved some amazing things together. So you understand how torturous and monumental this decision is — especially coming after an election I spent the last 6 months of my life working toward.
I spent the majority of my weekend shaking with anxious indecision. I didn't want to disappoint people. I didn't want people to be angry. But I prayed with my family, and we determined that I have to take this opportunity for my long-term security.
So what does that mean?
I have resigned from all of my Republican partisan positions and I signed my new client contracts this yesterday. Jessica Colón will take my place as YRNF Chair. We're working VERY hard to make sure the transition is seamless.
The elections of 2007 and 2008 are absolutely critical and the YRNF needs to be operating at full capacity – no limits, no constraints. I have the utmost confidence in Jessica Colón and the team we have all built to lead the Young Republicans into a new era of accomplishment. I believe in the strength and resolve of the organization and its members and have full confidence that my resignation will in no way hinder the new administration’s capability to make a positive impact on the upcoming elections. Together, we adopted our Recruit, Educate and Deploy strategy. Please support Jessica and the team. The whole 21-person elected team is still in place, save one.
With strong and talented people in place ready to take over the fight, my decision became at least a little easier. It would be (as my mom said) stupid to bypass this business opportunity.
My parents also gave me one other piece of advice. It was a piece of advice that I didn't need because it was already in my heart to do. Once we made the decision, they told me, "Make sure you talk to all of those nice people in Florida. We know how much they did for you and we know how much you care for them."
So, I hope you can understand how heart-wrenching this has been for me. And I hope you know how much I appreciate everything all of you have done me and for the Young Republicans.
This whole thing has been as unexpected to me as much as it has you. I hope you can support me on one of the "biggest decisions of my life."
Your Friend,
Glenn Murphy

There seems to be a lot of excuse making going on here. Glenn Murphy has been very publicly OUTED. Even if the act was consensual it was still GAY SEX initiated by Glenn Murphy, AGAIN. One thing that the Republican power structure cannot endure is its leaders to be publicly associated with initiating HOMOSEXUAL BEHAVIOR. The morality of their base sees this behavior as unatural and an afront to God.
Glenn Murphy is in a horrible situation. He is likely a closeted aging homosexual who spends much of his time with college aged or younger male Republicans who see him as a role model. Probably celibate to protect his career, drunkeness or desperation or both result in poor decision making. His public political career ends just as it was beginning. Now he will be forgotten, working hard in the background, possibly still in denial, probably not in counseling. Quietly the internet gremlins wipe his Republican leadership down the memory hole...

Glenn never belonged to the College Republicans at IU. Truth be told, he was actually a College Democrat at IU.

Oh, and I forgot to say that your post also implies that people can't be as attractive at 40 or 50 as 20 year olds, and I think that's incorrect and offensive, too.
Posted by: | Aug 10, 2007 at 04:13 PM
"Why the hell do you think that Playboy models are all in their 20s? Does that make a 40 or 50 yo man who buys Playboy a pedophile?"
Yes. They are my daughter's age. I agree with the poster you are attacking. Pretty nasty. How does someone get so attracted to people who are so much younger?
Posted by: | Aug 10, 2007 at 04:10 PM
A lot of people new this Murphy scum at Indiana University back around 1995 to 1997 and new he had gay relationships that he was trying to hide. I am not saying anything bad about being gay, but he was happy to stand against homosexuality in his campaigns as much as he did, even though he is one himself. What people also know and never came out about is that he has done these sleep time BJ's on a number of occasions to many people back at IU. People in the IU young republicans (at the time) could vouch if you can find them. It was never reported b/c obviously what college guy wants to come out and admit that happened. Probably not to many.
Posted by: DJ | Aug 10, 2007 at 02:27 PM
To the "libertarian democrat" who thinks a 40 year old attracted to a 22 yo is akin to pedophilia, you are an idiot.
Pedophilia is defined as attraction to a human being who has not been through puberty. Attraction to a 16 yo old may be illegal, but is not technically pedphilia.
Why the hell do you think that Playboy models are all in their 20s? Does that make a 40 or 50 yo man who buys Playboy a pedophile?

Okay... I guess it has to be spelled out for some who wish to try to make this a case of Democrat's being hypocritical. Sigh.
Mr. Murphy is being accused of rape. That is an intentional infliction of harm to a victim.
Republicans continually set themselves up as the the party of morality yet so many of them seem to be living a lie.
Democrats say that we should leave alone people that aren't harming anyone and let them live their lives... Republicans want to enact laws that say, "Thou shalt not..."
Republicans say they believe in personal liberty and a person's rights... Hoever, they want to regulate and legislate a person's sex life.
If you wish to determine hypocritical behavior, then let's do it on the facts:
Mark Foley
Ted Haggard
David Vitter
Bob Allen
Glenn Murphy
Please, give us a break!

Sorry for the victim of this assault.
Glad to see another gay-bashing Republican moralist get caught acting out his deeply-repressed sexual feelings.
It is a source of legitimate delight to see the self-righteous be undone.
What the Murphy apologists on this thread fail to acknowledge is that Democrats caught in sexual misconduct have usually not built a career on bloviating and lying about the sins of others.

Never mind. Ignore my other post.

Was the name of the victim removed in the attorney's post? Not that I want it posted. It is pretty easy to figure out who it is by the police report.

"Where can people with info about Glenn Murphy's college days at Indiana U between 1995-1997 post? Chi Phi Fraternity?"
Jerry,
My understanding is that nothing from the Chi Phi incident was documented; I'm told it was a unanimous vote to expel him from the fraternity, and he left campus shortly thereafter.
If you've got documentation, however, feel free to send it to takingdownwords@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

Not to be too juvenile, but I have tried to get the blog VeritasRex to deal with this issue, make a comment on it, at least acknowledge that there is something wrong with the behavior. And of course they refuse. I guess the IFI's of the world simpy want to ignore the fact that they'd like to gay-bash while they look the other way with the criminals in their midst.

The next convention of Young Republicans is in 2009 in Indianapolis. The convention people better be making sure they're keeping that business!

Amazing. Just goes to show that conservatives take care of their own. His company gets the bid... hmmmm wonder how that happened. Rich keep getting richer and the conservatives continue being hippocrates about sex.

Why isn't Wilder being charged with Obstruction of Justice. He tried to cover up a crime. From what I hear he is another closet case. Maybe that is why he and Murphy are so close and he tried to cover up this crime!

Glenn isn't just gay, he's a sexual predator! Pinky, you need to read the posts above more carefully. This is a guy who feigns sleep in order to access his victims. Just because it's only a blow job and doesn't involve any violence, doesn't make it right. It's nonconsensual sex .... period. Take the guy out and put a women in the bed and no one would have a problem with who the perpetrator was and who was raped.
Posted by: | Aug 09, 2007 at 07:48 AM
I believe he was really performing an exorcism. And by the way, he did say he had a new JOB! A big new luscious but hard JOB!
Posted by: Political Observer | Aug 09, 2007 at 07:38 AM
Glenn has been doing this since high school. Tried it with several of my guy friends. Noone ever said anything. They were too freaked out and were afraid people would accuse them of being gay. Not that being gay is wrong, but to a very hetero high school boy, that label would be too much to bear. They told me his MO was to feign like he was sleeping, probably for deniability later. I talked to 2 of them today and they both laughed. Neither would be willing to come forward, but they were glad he's finally getting what he deserves. There is no question in their minds hat he is guilty, because the scene the report sets describes what happened to them over 14 years ago to a tee. Sad, because Glenn is really a nice guy. Repressed sexuality causes horrible behavior.
Posted by: | Aug 09, 2007 at 01:35 AM
Pinky,
As a lifelong Republican its folks like you that make me sick. You find the most implausible conspiracy theories, when ever one of our folks are wrong but can’t wait to jump on the other side. The sad fact is that neither party is perfect because we’re made up humans, who make mistakes, and commit crimes and sometimes do horribly disturbed things.
As a victim of a previous sexual assault I know how hard it is to come forward (I never did) because I was afraid of being re-victimized by people like you. While very little pisses me off more than a false accusation, (because it gives people like the ammunition you need to tell everyone who has the courage to come forward that they are a liar) this does not seem like one.
First, you have the claim that it was consensual, which lets assume is correct. Then why did he come forward. No one walked in on them, so if the boy is gay or had a consensual gay experience why bring it up. He could have pretended it never happened and went on his merry way. I doubt he was concerned about Glenn bragging about it.
Second why did Glenn spend days trying to contact this guy and his sister. If I was accused of a sexual assault that really was consensual, I wouldn’t dare contact the victim for fear of it being misrepresented as trying to dissuade them from coming forward.
Finally, sexual predators for the most part have a motis operandi in that general commit their crimes in the same manner over and over again. So are you seriously arguing that two different kids, approximately 10 years apart come up with the exact same story to cover up consensual gay sex, even though apparently in the most recent case there is no reason to believe anyone had found out? Also if you were Glenn and you had a previous experience where you were accused of doing something like this, would you ever in your life go into a room to sleep with the door closed with another boy? The only reason I could see doing it, is if you wanted to repeat the act.
I am sorry for the long post, but Pinky it’s people like you that make being a Republican so damn hard sometimes. And before you ask, I do know Glenn but I am disgusted by these events and the only person I have sympathy for is the victim.
Posted by: | Aug 09, 2007 at 12:16 AM
Just more of the GOP lip service that we get everyday, only in this case it was a little more up close and personal. If they wouldn't have built their empire on homophobic hysteria, little would be said about this. But it is hard to have your cake and eat it too.......no matter which hand you use.
Posted by: | Aug 08, 2007 at 11:00 PM
3 things-
You got to really be passed out not to hear a drunk 230+ pounder coming down from the top bunk. Unless Glenn is really stealth.
Secondly- It's not like like Glenn woke up at a 6:00AM and descided he needed a penis in his mouth, he must've been up all night. The guy (victim) probably woke up when his joint got sore.
lastly- they got those sexy bunk beds in prison too, cept it'll probably be Glenn listening nervously for the 4oo pounder coming down from the top bunk.

Once again I said "he is innocent until proven guily", I think that is pretty stern and not all over the board. You people are sooooo judgemental.
No I would not like to see this happen to anyone, but also there are "conspiracy theories" out there to ruin peoples lives.
And he ALLEGEDLY believes it WAS CONSENSUAL!
Oh and by the way the victims sister couldn't "remember if her mother heard any of it or not, due to she was walking in and out of the room".
You are right, it is my choice and is suppose to be the right of living in America, reguardless of your political or sexual preferance.....You are innocent until proven guily!
Posted by: pinky | Aug 08, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Pinky,
I am a Republican and I heard rumors about the 1998 incident earlier this year. How? Someone told me Glenn was about to become YR National chairman and that if he did, it would be a disaster because of allegations of the previous oral-sexual assault. This person is a statehouse Republican of the highest caliber. He was absolutely dead-on. Like Nostradamus times ten. Both parties have their problems, and within six months, the Dems will have their turn at it. But that's no excuse for spin.
Posted by: The 11th Commandment Doesn't Apply Here | Aug 08, 2007 at 10:35 PM
"Again do any of you even know Glenn? I thought not! You all also live in glass houses!"
Calm down, sister.
The conspiracy theories will go to your head.
You're all over the board with your defense of Murphy. I'm sure you think he's a nice guy, and that's grand. But this victim, his sister and his mother told the police that your nice guy friend sexually assaulted him.
And he allegedly did it before.
So, yeah, I think that's news. And I'm going to give the victim, who came forward and reported this under what appears to be pressure from Murphy's attorney, the benefit of the doubt for the time being.
Forgive me for erring on the side of making sure this never happens again.
If you want to stand with Murphy, that's your choice, but I see a lot of potential reasons not to.
For the record, 9:55, I corrected the redacted information as soon as I found out about it. Murphy's attorney deliberately posted it, and I have since redacted that, too.

first of all, I never said this was a "gay-lifestlyle", I said he believes it was consensual. Go back and re-read my post. I never even said anything about his sexuality except "so what" and he is INNOCENT until proven guilty, so get over yourself. Aww...so we should feel sorry for the guy who consumed too much alcohol and went into a back bedroom and closed the door with another man. Again do any of you even know Glenn? I thought not! You all also live in glass houses!
Posted by: pinky | Aug 08, 2007 at 10:11 PM
Dear Pinky,
I'm gay and I don't go looking for sleeping men to force myself on, so don't even start it. If some creep started that on me I'd have a hard time with it, but let me assure you I'd be mad as hell. Don't you dare attribute this kind of behavior to the "gay lifestyle." People like you are really part of the problem people like me face. You seem to think that somehow this is gay behavior. Well, it's not. It's a sexual assault, whether the guy who was assaulted was gay or not and whether Murphy was gay or not. I hope you can figure that out.
Posted by: Freddie Mercury | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:59 PM
It was actually first released by TDW when one of the references to him was not redacted in the report that was posted.
Posted by: | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:55 PM
No #$%^, TDW! And he says it WAS consensual. And being in the political world I'm sure you know how scandals are made up, "dear". Not to mention, if you thought this was a real case do you think it would have been leaked to the press this soon and an exact copy of what happened several years ago? No it does does not make the act right, but women and men are raped every day, and their predetors are innocent until proven guily. So until you have your evidence, "Mr Prosecutor", stop your witch hunt...and your "terms of endearment".
Posted by: pinky | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:54 PM
I still don't care what Clinton did. It was consensual and was none of my business. This was not consensual.
Posted by: ur | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:51 PM
It took a whole lot of courage for this man to report what was done to him, and what does he get? The perp's attorney releases his name. Releases his name. I am really sick of people saying there must be nothing to it because three days (or however long) passed. A lot of sexual assault victims just feel dirty and hurt and just want to get away from the perp and the site of the assault and don't even feel safe to report it. This guy reports it and what happens? His name is released by the attorney. Pure retaliation for having reported. That's what it is. No wonder people who have been victimized like this often don't report. This man probably didn't have a baseball bat or anything else handy. And if he did protect himself, here's a powerful man who would put everything back on this victim. I don't understand why anyone wants the victim to have done something different, perhaps thinking that he wasn't manly enough because Murphy didn't come out of there in an ambulance. Jeez.
Posted by: Freddie Mercury | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:49 PM
"IF you were a man (or woman, but especially a man) who was the victim of a sexual assault like this, at the mouth of a powerful male, how would you feel about reporting it?"
It took a lot of courage for the victim in this case to report it to the police. That, unfortunately, has been lost in the punchlines.

Steph,
On this thread?
I'm trying to catch and delete them.
Posted by: TDW | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:33 PM
"Yes he is a Republican and turns out to be gay, so what."
Michele,
Get a grip. We're not talking about his being gay; we're talking about him allegedly sexually assaulting a man in his sleep.
I'm sure you can see the difference.
And I know you know enough to realize that the Clinton affair was consensual. Or did they not put that in the Standard GOP Response To Sex Scandals Talking Points?
Lemme put it to you this way: If Glenn had reportedly crawled into bed with a woman and started having sex with her, would you be okay with that?
It ain't his sexual orientation that's at issue here, dear.
Posted by: TDW | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:32 PM
Jen, the victim's name is in the post at 9:00 also.
Posted by: Steph Mineart | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:32 PM
Talking about glass houses, do any of you even know Glenn? Truely KNOW him, not just hear-say? Yes he is a Republican and turns out to be gay, so what. In this day and age he probably had to stay in the closet. It's just too bad this is how it had to come out. I bet everyone of you have something that you are ashamed of too, it just hasn't been leaked to the press. And just because this has happened does not mean all Republicans are in the same boat. Does that mean all Democrats have sexual affairs? At least Glenn wasn't running our country on his time.
Posted by: pinky | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:28 PM
IF you were a man (or woman, but especially a man) who was the victim of a sexual assault like this, at the mouth of a powerful male, how would you feel about reporting it? People are already talking about this guy like he's gay and somehow wanted it. As for whether or not the 1998 case was covered up, 1) what county are we talking about and 2) have you never heard of that happening before?
Posted by: | Aug 08, 2007 at 09:27 PM
"It would be (as my mom said) stupid to bypass this business opportunity."
Classic Frank Luntz reframing of the issue. Prison as a "business opportunity".
"This whole thing has been as unexpected to me as much as it has you."
But nowhere nearly as unexpected as to the guy whose penis was in my mouth when he awoke!!

Innocent until proven guilty, but at least as Republicans we are saying it is wrong and distancing ourselves and the organization from him. The democrats would be promoting him to higher positions of power and trying to stand up for him and tell you how it wasn't really "sex" and therefore, not really an issue.
Posted by: | Aug 08, 2007 at 06:35 PM
"The only thing Democrats are consistant (sic) about is hypocrisy. Democrats are the only people who are innocent till proven guilty. Everyone else is guity (sic), even if proven innocent!!"
What complete and total nonsense. Republicans are far more guilty of this than Democrats. Just watch Fox News, with their pundits' love of denigrating adjectives and adverbs, and tell me how often they admit anyone in the GOP has done anything wrong. Bill O'Reilly even suggested, recently, that Democratic Senator Dodd was a liar for reminding O'Reilly he'd called for terrorists to attack San Francisco. O'Reilly insisted he'd never said such a thing, but there's tape of him doing in on November 7, 2005. Heard any apology from him, yet?
No, the only thing I find Dems consistent in is their cowardice in the face of "Repugnican" bullying.
