The wait is over...
The results are final and Jim Schellinger has officially conceded to Jill Long Thompson.
Jim received 567,553 votes to Jill's 574,655.
Congrats to everyone on a historic election cycle, and for surviving the initial punch. Now it's on to November and sweeping the Republicans out of office!
As I am still recovering from a very long weekend of campaigning, I am not going to recap the races tonight. Hopefully I'll get back in the swing of things tomorrow and put up a post with the surprises and events from Election Day. Until then, let's all rest up and get ready for the next battle.

You are complaining because the LG is driving her OWN vehicle to work, spending her OWN money to put gas in that vehicle????? Incredible.

"Regardless where your car is made, if it's an American automobile, the profits from that company support American jobs. "
That's naive, and not reflective at all of how the automotive industry works (Remeber until a couple months ago, it was DAIMLER-Chysler. Emphasis on the Daimler). Even things like design and prototyping are outsourced by our "American" automakers in Detroit.
I agree with you that the LG's choice to drive a Benz to the Statehouse isn't politically savvy. But don't use that fact to try and romanticize the machinations of the Detroit 3.

Petty Cash, that's a pretty small minded view. Workers build a Ford in Mexico and send the profits back to America to pay the executives who sent the jobs overseas and put American workers out of work to begin with. That doesn't make it an American car in my book. You better decide what party you're fighting for.

Regardless where your car is made, if it's an American automobile, the profits from that company support American jobs.
Mercedes makes a few autos here, but it's a German-domiciled corporation, and their profits are cash-swept overseas.
In a state where automobile manufacturing is hugely important, driving a foreign car into the Statehouse parking lot is one of the stupidest political moves I can think of. The symbolism is stark. And I can't believe her political advisers haven't told her that.
Sure she's entitled. That doesn't make it smart. If I were LG and had a Mercedes, it'd stay in my garage. The state provides her a vehicle.
And DemEpitaph--you can wax poetic all you want. I've heard her speak, and, more importantly, watched her govern. I know folks who've bene on foreign trade missions who were stunned at her ineptitude. John Mutz she ain't. She is a walking talking disaster. Worse than Bob Orr as LG, and that's saying a lot.
Again--we traded in Kathy Davis for this?

Here's a prediction. Look for Jill Long to reach out to Dr.Woody Myers as her Lt. Gov.

Good Job Petty Cash, you managed to marginalize Indiana's first elected female LG. How progressive you are! Call her a ditz, but at least she has policy to stand on (unlike Jim Schellinger). Yeah, that would be great to put him on the ticket... Might as well quit now with both of those empty suits/pantsuits.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you folks posting during the day actually do "work" at the statehouse, but a better guess would probably be one of the drop-out factories in town.
Posted by: DemEpitaph | May 08, 2008 at 01:59 PM
I agree Mishawaka. The reality is that the Governor is up on the air and he's staying up through the election. A few commercials from Jill in mid October that talk about selling our state and IPALCO are going to make this party look ridiculous. She needs to head to the highroad, come up with creative solutions to our state's problems, and win the way Mitch wins. Ideas and positive campaigning aren't her strong suit though.

petty cash, i always like reading your remarks. from your 9:11am post i assume you are a fellow statehouse worker bee. i walk by that car everyday.

"You're right. Just walked past her driving spot and there it was. Thanks for the correction.
The fact it's foreign makes her an even bigger ditz."
Bah - even "American" cars are foreign. My Equinox has a German transmission, a (shudder) Chinese engine, and was assembled in Ontario. I can't begrudge her for a Benz, they're amazing machines - and I'm no ditz, thanks very much!

While Mitch Daniels is already a known quantity, and especially for the bad things he has done, his reelection fund worries me a bit because he has the ability to frame the race on his terms. If JLT comes out swinging Mitch can call her, then raise her bet. I would not try to match him spot for spot on tv, no matter what Sautter tells her. I would rely on old fashioned direct mail and door to door. 100,000 voted for her and Jim in the primary, there should be some volunteers there.
Posted by: Mishawaka | May 08, 2008 at 10:17 AM
I hate to say it, but the last couple posts were right. Every time Daniels reminds Hoosiers how much they have done (whether we agree with it or not) people are going to think that this Governor has actually been working to try and make things better. A lot of numbers are on his side, too, when comparing to other states in the Midwest. Hell, look at Michigan alone and everyone will probably be apprehensive to elect a woman democrat with a questionable record. JLT better get moving, but I fear she's already in the dust.

Tim Jeffers for Lt. Governor?
Posted by: | May 08, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Every single time that ad (and the others he's continuing) comes on, we will be further and further behind. JLT and the state party had better get their game face on and start playing hardball real soon
Posted by: | May 08, 2008 at 09:19 AM
11:40, are you kidding me? That ad scared the hell out of me. It's one of the best I've ever seen. Just words on a screen and you can't take your eyes off of it. I watched it over again three times just to catch it all there's so much there. The score alone probably cost 20 grand. If it's that v. Jill Long Thompson on TV whining about the sales tax on gasoline and saying she won't sell off our state we're screwed.
Posted by: | May 08, 2008 at 09:13 AM
You're right. Just walked past her driving spot and there it was. Thanks for the correction.
The fact it's foreign makes her an even bigger ditz.
We gave up Kathy Davis for her. Ugh.
Posted by: Petty Cash | May 08, 2008 at 09:11 AM
"And her Corvette.
What a ditz."
I think it's actually a Benz. Beats the third-world-starving behemoth she was driving before!
Posted by: Lance | May 08, 2008 at 08:52 AM
Oh no no no, Mr. Grammar Man.
Chop off everything after "us." Sounds right, right? You're stuck with us? You wouldn't say you're stuck with we, would ya? "Us" is proper when it's the object of the sentence, we when it's the subject. Not that it's a big deal, but when you endeavor to correct someone's grammar, try being correct, it usually works better that way.

JLT would be well advised to strongly consider asking Jim to be her Lt., and he would be serving the party well to accept. Well over 1 million voters in the primary went to the two of them; if they can bury their axes and show cooperative teamwork for the greater good of the state, we have a much better force to beat Mitch with in the fall. The idea of Barack and Hillary sharing their ticket is silly; Jill and Jim is not.
Posted by: | May 08, 2008 at 07:00 AM
I think Jen, or someone, did a marvelous job with Jim's campaign.
When she left to work there, by all accounts, he was 7-10 pts. down. I have no idea why that gap existed, but voters have their preferences. He closed that gap, and damned near won it.
The running-mate thing sounds great. All along, he seeme dmore suited to the LG thing, at least to me. And it would have the added impact of replacing the Lite Gov.
And her Corvette.
What a ditz.
Posted by: Petty Cash | May 08, 2008 at 06:34 AM
Say what you will about Jen. She had the guts to pick her candidate to the point of dropping everything to do so. That's pretty courageous given the amount of folks here that would take such glee in seeing her fall.
If it's true she won't be back, that's too bad. It doesn't seem as though there are as many posts since she's been gone, and to be frank, the snark isn't the same either.
I just can't believe a baby is more fun to play with than a blog :)

"us dreaded bloggers" ...that is "WE dreaded bloggers...as in "We three Kings.....you are as bad as my kids.
Pleaae return to spirted blogging.

I, too, voted for Schellinger, in part because I believe Hoosiers aren't yet ready to elect a woman governor, especially one as bookish with a phD in business! I commend Schellinger for conceding and recognizing the will of the voters. But given the closeness of the race, and the split between "north" and "central" Indiana, Long Thompson should ask Schellinger to be her running mate. And make history together. Keep the eye on the prize.

I miss Jen, too. But I do understand the mommy part.
I HATE the Daniels' ad and I mute it every time it comes on, which is an awful lot today. Let him drain his coffers, the sooner the better. All the fancy ads in the world does not undo what he'd done TO a lot of Hoosiers. Ditch Mitch.
Posted by: | May 08, 2008 at 12:32 AM
Well, it didn't take long. I just saw a re-election ad for Mitch on TV. No pictures, no talking, just an explosion of accomplishments (many of which should have had asterisks attached) bursting onto the screen accompanied by music reminiscent of the Gladiator theme and a western epic. Then a teeny pic of Mitch. The ad was really unattractive and GREEN. What was up with that? Couldn't have cost much to produce. But then, wasn't Woody Myers first out of the blocks last cycle? Didn't work for him.
Posted by: missing the scoop | May 07, 2008 at 11:40 PM
I haven't spoken with Jen since the Election. I got the impression when she left that she may not be returning to the blog regardless of the outcome of the primary. Now that she has a kid, she seemed ready to be more full time mom and not full time blogger. If that's the case, you may be stuck with us dreaded bloggers for a while, but I think we'll all have fun beating up on Mitch and the Republicans together for the next 7 months.
